5/14-5/16 Playing with Glue

This is my profile icon on the ED Forum. I've been thinking of changing it, but haven't so far.

And here's a noxyism: (heee)

Planning on Catching Up
Visiting My Old Teacher

Okay, so, back in May, the ED Forum had a month long celebration for its two year anniversary. The celebration included many contests and giveaways. One of the contests was called "Color Me Beautiful". We were given this picture:

And asked to color it. Simple enough. But I immediately thought to use a coloring technique involving glue, instead of normal coloring methods. The contest ended before I could find my camera to take pics, so I was unable to enter, but I did take pics anyway. The entries in the contest were all so lovely anyhow, I wasn't sad about not entering at all!

So... when I was a kid, "glue art" was a craze. Kids would find a flat, hard surface. They'd draw on that surface with markers, then quickly put a layer of elmer's glue over it. When the glue dried, you could peel the art right off the surface, and end up with a partially transparent, colored treasure. My mom wouldn't let me do this at home. I was recently informed by my brother that he used to do them in his desk, but I was never able to - I'd bump the glue before it dried and just end up with a mess. But I never forgot the technique, and always wanted to try it with a coloring page. (Most of the "glue art" when I was a kid were basic, tye dye looking circles - nothing too complex, or else the glue would take the ink and bleed it all together, and you'd end up with an ugly looking thing.)

Wanting to do this and being able to do this are two different things. I couldn't use the glue art method to "color" a page because I felt it would require a glass table to act as the hard surface. The coloring page would be placed beneath it, and the art would be made over it. I didn't have any glass tables lying around though. Until now. Well, technically we've had the table for about two years, but though I thought of playing with glue back then, I wanted to choose a special coloring page to color. So it wasn't until Color Me Beautiful that I felt able to do it.

Here are some pics of the colorings while the glue was still drying:
My original idea was to make one girl two times. (That's why their corsets are somewhat similar.) Then, if I messed up on one, I could chop up the second and glue them together. But I ended up making two different girls entirely.

And one ended up avatar style. LOL. Not sure why I ended up coloring her blue, but eh.

There's the two, waiting to dry. I was sooo impatient doing these. That glue takes FOREVER dang it.

And here they are, finished:

And there they are with plain white sheets of paper underneath the glass instead of the coloring sheet:

I actually left them on the glass for a looong time. No one needed the table, so I didn't feel a need to move them. Bad move though. Over the summer, our AC broke, and the landlord couldn't get it fixed for TWO WEEKS. We were DYING. We had almost every single window open, and it was still smoldering. What was worse - during this time - every other day was a storm. So we'd have to close the windows! Then we suffocated until the storm subsided. But the window in front of the table was always the last to get closed, because it was the window in a room rarely used. It also happened to be a window that always faced the storm. Which meant things got wet in front of the window, fast. So the glue has water spots now. Which is sorta sad, but eh, you can't notice them unless you go reeeal close to them, and I've now placed them in a spot where you'd have to stand on a chair to get that close. So ha!

These are them without the glass, just on top of paper.

And those are them in their new home.

On my mirror at my craft desk. :)

  1. Noxy, that's such a cool idea! I love the way they turned out. I wish that you'd been able to enter the contest so everyone on the forum could see them.
